Abstract
This research explores the theory that a negative incident involving a celebrity endorser improves consumer happiness. More specifically, this research focuses on the fact that consumers tend to derive pleasure from the unhappiness of celebrities, and suggests that this pleasure heightens perceived consumer happiness. An experiment was conducted as part of this study to verify related hypotheses. The results of the experiment showed that female consumers feel more happiness when the celebrity involved in the negative incident is of the same gender and nationality as the consumer. The results showed, however, that male consumers do not feel an increased sense of happiness when faced with a negative incident involving a celebrity, regardless of the gender and/or nationality of the celebrity. This study is expected to contribute to research on the persuasiveness of a celebrity endorser involved in a negative incident.
