Abstract
This study emphasizes the necessity of a strategic design approach that incorporates the nonlinear relationship between maintenance capacity and repair time in weapon system maintenance planning, and it empirically verifies this through a System Dynamics–based simulation. While previous research has largely adopted a linear approach that assumes repair time to be constant and independent of maintenance capacity, this study defines the Capacity Redundancy Index (CRI) as a policy variable and models repair time to respond nonlinearly to capacity shortages and surpluses, focusing on the Korean Amphibious Assault Vehicle (KAAV). The analysis shows that the nonlinear model achieved slightly higher availability (0.79 vs. 0.78) and approximately 14% lower total cost (2,392 vs. 2,794) than the linear model, even at a lower level of redundancy (CRI 0.2325 vs. 0.2489). In particular, shortage cost decreased significantly from 303.11 to 65.10 (–78.5%). These findings demonstrate that a dynamic approach reflecting nonlinear responses in real maintenance environments is superior in resource efficiency compared to static, mean-centered planning. Furthermore, by redefining the CRI not merely as a measure of redundancy but as a designable strategic variable, this study presents a practical alternative for military maintenance systems operating under severe resource constraints.
