Abstract
The purpose of this research is to investigate an emerging academic field that integrates urban planning and public health in the context of landuse, transportation, the environment, and public health. The rationale for this model is that public health outcomes stem from a variety of factors in terms of individual lifestyles, demographic and socioeconomic status(SES), and the built environment. Although the influence of individual lifestyles and SES on health outcomes have been comprehensively documented in the public health and medical literature, the relationship between the built environment and health outcomes only recently emerged in the 2000s. This study provides a conceptual framework comprising landuse, transportation, the environment and public health and identifies the key findings and limitations of existing studies on the relationship between the built environment and health outcomes. Overall, existing studies provide evidence of a significant association between the built environment and public health outcomes. However, despite the considerable amount of research pertaining to this topic, a significant causal relationship between built environments and health outcomes has not been established due to self-selection issue, data limitation, and measurement errors. This study discusses research opportunities and change in the built environment that can improve public health in Korean cities.
