Abstract
While learning with mobile devices presents the potentials for inquiry and contextual learning, it is difficult to understand how learners learn in this situation. Mobile learning includes location-based activities and understandings, different from desktop-applied learning, and its learning process can be understood by analyzing both discourse and non-discourse activities. The framework of distributed cognition is useful to analyze mobile learning in that according to distributed cognition, learning is the process of sharing and coordinating representations of participating agents in a cognitive system as a unit of analysis. This analysis enables to understand how mobile devices as artifacts contribute to learning. The current study as a case study aims to understand the learning processes of the collaborative field-based learning with mobile devices from the perspective of distributed cognition. Research questions include:1) what aspects are observed when distributed cognition is shared during the collaborative field-based learning with mobile devices as a cognitive system? 2) what are knowledge representations of learners as learning evidence through cognition sharing in the collaborative field trip with mobile devices? The participants for the study include twelve 4th graders and a teacher, consisting of 6 groups. A description for recorded videos is a primary data source. In result, sharing representations among student-student-artifact (SSA) indicates highest. The knowledge representations as the evidence of learning include ‘technical understanding of location’ and ‘collaborative understanding of location-based concepts’. The results of the study can be a case of the discourse and non-discourse analysis for learning processes in the distributed cognition, learner-centered, technology learning and provide implications for design of relevant learning environments.
