초록
This paper will discuss Tirso de Molina’s thoughts on marriage presented in Don Gil de las calzas verdes. Tirso de Molina, who lived during the Golden Age, had progressive ideas on marriage in a time when fathers’ power dominated. Tirso de Molina expressed his ideas on marriage in several of his plays. In Don Gil de las calzas verdes specifically, we can see how Tirso de Molina questioned the traditional ideas on marriage which forced children to obey and completely dedicate themselves to fathers regardless of whether they had their spouse or their own free will. He asked if these traditional ideas were suitable for the new upcoming age. Doña Juana and don Martín challenged marital social norms with a clandestine marriage. However, after the marriage, he completely changed and followed the patriarchal rules for sons to become submissive, obedient, and faithful despite whatever his father asked. Compared to him, doña Juana encountered her husband’s bad behavior, she refused to abide by the compliant attitude which that society expected. Tirso de Molina, who tried to follow progressive marital ideas, thought it was foolish to obey traditional marital ones by showing doña Juana’s adventures of marriage. Tirso de Molina believed that for the new upcoming age, his ideas about marriage were needed to develop better relationships between husbands and wives. In this way, he used his playwriting to advocate for progressive marital ideas.
