Abstract
Pat Mora, in House of Houses, portrays a particular Southwestern Chicana life through collecting and reappropriating family memories. She delves into her house which is constructed based on her imagination and dreams, to find the root of what formulates her and her family in both conscious and unconscious realm. Mora embodies her house as 'protected intimacy' and 'sacred space', borrowing these notions from The Poetics of Space of Gaston Bachelard. She tries to discover 'collective unconscious' that can be interpreted as the entity of affective memories, ritual performances and ongoing psychological projection through generations. She reveals that there exist prototypes of dream as fundamental theme of the family. This theme embodies the house as an eternal home that provides her with the perpetuity of being as well as Santa Fe.
