Abstract

This study empirically examines how different types of AI-based Virtual Fitting Room (VFR) technologies affect consumer experience and satisfaction, with a particular focus on the moderating roles of digital literacy and self-efficacy. Specifically, the research compares two widely used commercial VFR technologies: 2D image synthesis and 3D customer modeling. A total of 272 participants engaged in a virtual fitting experience and subsequently completed a survey. The data were analyzed using the PROCESS macro to test for mediation and moderation effects. Results revealed that while the type of virtual fitting technology did not directly affect consumer satisfaction, it did have an indirect effect, mediated by perceived accuracy. However, other experiential dimensions attractiveness, interactivity, and ease of use did not show significant mediating effects. Furthermore, digital literacy had significant direct effects on consumer satisfaction and also demonstrated interaction effects with the type of fitting technology under certain conditions. Consumers with lower levels of digital literacy tended to report higher satisfaction with the 2D image synthesis technology, whereas those with higher levels responded more positively to the 3D customer modeling technology. This study provides a systematic understanding of consumer responses to technological variation in terms of user experience and highlights the need for personalized technology adoption strategies based on individual consumer characteristics. These findings offer both theoretical insights and practical implications for promoting the acceptance and diffusion of AI-driven online shopping technologies.
