초록

Going a step forward from the works of Arturo Pérez-Reverte other works that generally include diverse mysteries, 『The Queen of South』investigates a more unique mystery, the inside of women. Based on the premise that Gender refers to a state of being male or female in cultural or social contexts, our thesis examines the process of the main character Teresa Mendoza’s formation of gender and also destruction of it. Teresa Mendoza, who used to be an unliberated woman in a patriarchal society Culiacán, Mexico, becomes the queen of the southern Spain, a land that was originally ruled by men. Starting in the era of simple femininity, Tereza Mendoza forms her identity as a strong woman who produces a life and also suggests a new point of view that regards to gender criticism. Besides, while looking at the beginning of Teresa’s gender destruction, this thesis focuses on the operation mechanism of that process: ‘reading’ and ‘memory’ that symbolically and consistently appear in 『The Queen of South』. Such investigation about a process of female exhausted hero’s formation and destruction of gender will contribute to the confirmation of the prospect of Pérez-Reverte and the 21th century Spanish Literature.
