Abstract
With the advancement of extended reality (XR) technologies, their applications in education have grown substantially. XR-based learning environments provide immersive and interactive experiences that enhance learner engagement. However, existing research has primarily focused on individual learning contexts, with limited attention given to the potential of XR in collaborative learning. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of XR-based collaborative learning and to derive implications for effective instructional design. A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines, analyzing 19 studies published between 2020 and August 2024. The studies were reviewed based on collaborative task types, implementation of learner interaction, task structure, and role assignment. Correspondence analysis was employed to examine relationships among key categories. The findings indicate a rise in XR-based collaborative learning research since 2023, with real-time interaction mediated by virtual avatars being the most common method of learner communication. Most tasks adopted reciprocal structures, and learner roles were often left unspecified. Notably, the effectiveness of collaboration appeared to be more influenced by the quality of interaction than by predefined roles. These findings suggest that XR-based collaborative learning should incorporate both technological and pedagogical elements that support meaningful learner interaction and the co-construction of knowledge. This study provides a systematic synthesis of XR-based collaborative learning and offers insights for instructional design in immersive learning environments.
