Abstract

This article explores the potential of Maker Education in designing future learning environments in the post-COVID-19 era. In particular, it analyzes the characteristics of Maker Education, such as makerspaces and maker activities, through a systematic review of literature from 2014 to 2019. One hundred eighteen research works were collected and classified for analysis. Findings show an increase in interest in Maker Education, especially in 2017. This educational approach integrates various theoretical and methodological perspectives based on design, inquiry, and hands-on experiences in informal education and interdisciplinary subjects that allow the possibility of linking curricular contents to formal education. Additionally, 3D printing, microprocessors, and computer software for programming have made personal fabrication more accessible to students. However, COVID-19 has marked a shift toward digital media and emphasized the vital role of educators in learners’ motivation and self-direction in flexible learning environments. Therefore, Maker Education requires new approaches for engagement and instructional models that revalue maker-centered environments, social organization, and collaborative networks. Likewise, it is necessary to adopt students’ values like self-initiative, autonomy, and social responsibility. Finally, new open and authentic learning environments beyond the traditional makerspace are also required.
