Abstract
This study aimed to explore the effects of generative artificial intelligence (ChatGPT) on learners’ performance and experiences across each stage of programming problem solving. Sixty undergraduate engineering students from a university in Seoul participated in a single-group repeated-measures experiment. Participants completed programming tasks based on Pólya’s four stages-understanding, planning, execution, and reflection—under both a control condition (without generative AI) and a treatment condition (with generative AI), using tasks and evaluation rubrics developed by the researcher. Quantitative analysis revealed that the treatment condition led to significantly higher performance in the planning and execution stages, while no significant difference was found in the understanding stage. The effect sizes followed the order of execution, planning, and understanding. Qualitative findings showed that generative AI helped reduce problem-solving time and supported grammar learning and debugging. However, learners lacking critical evaluation skills experienced confusion or reduced self-directed learning. The analysis also indicated that learners’ programming skills, strategies for using generative AI, and critical thinking abilities influenced how effectively the tool was utilized. These findings suggest that the integration of generative AI into programming education should consider the cognitive demands of each problem-solving stage and learners’ individual characteristics, emphasizing the need for differentiated instructional strategies.
