Abstract
This study examines the relationship between pronunciation assessment (PRN) and speaking performance (SPK) among Korean learners of Spanish, based on the “Korean Learners’ Spanish Speech Corpus” provided by AI Hub in Korea. The research aims to investigate how automatically generated pronunciation scores relate to actual speaking indicators, and whether this relationship varies depending on learners’ language proficiency. To this end, the study addresses the following research questions: (1) Do automated pronunciation scores correlate significantly with speaking performance measures (total utterance length and utterance count)? (2) Can automated pronunciation scores significantly predict speaking performance indicators? (3) How does the relationship between pronunciation scores and speaking performance indicators vary by learners’ language proficiency level? The results reveal a consistent positive correlation between PRN scores (articulation, prosody, total) and SPK indicators. Furthermore, regression analysis shows that the PRN total score significantly predicts SPK performance. The ability-group analysis indicates that learners at the LOW proficiency level exhibit the strongest correlations, suggesting that pronunciation scores may serve as a meaningful predictor of speaking ability at earlier stages of learning. These findings highlight the potential of automated pronunciation assessment systems as diagnostic and feedback tools, particularly for beginning learners of Spanish.
