Abstract

This study emphasizes the significance of pronunciation education in Korean language education and the necessity for a fresh perspective and approach to pronunciation education in response to the regular administration of the TOPIK Speaking Test and the integration of AI-based automated scoring. To substantiate this assertion, the study analyzes the definition of ‘comprehensible pronunciation,’ which is one of the evaluation criteria of the TOPIK Speaking Test, drawing on prior research. The primary considerations include maintaining a natural speaking pace, avoiding excessive slowness, accurately articulating both segmental and suprasegmental elements to minimize foreign accents, and utilizing pauses appropriately. Furthermore, given the current limitations of AI-based speech recognition technology in assessing content and discourse of speech, the study suggests that precise pronunciation skills will play a pivotal role as an automated scoring criterion for language fluency. Therefore, creating pronunciation teaching methods that make use of cutting-edge technology is more important than ever. The study recommends establishing an L2 spoken language corpus and designing a hybrid scoring system that blends automated scoring technology with human evaluation.
