Abstract
Amidst the ongoing transformation of educational settings driven by rapidly evolving technology, this study explores the educational feasibility of an AI system designed to support students' meta-attention. Learning environments are increasingly digitalized, opening possibilities for collecting learner data and providing personalized support. However, such settings may also pose unexpected educational challenges as digital media can induce multitasking behaviors and distractibility, potentially impeding effective learning processes. Learning requires student attention, making it essential to establish supportive measures that enhance this ability. Leveraging recent advancements in learning analytics and its integration with AI capabilities, this study develops a design for an AI system supporting meta-attention, which helps learners to regulate their attentional processes in learning activities. Design principles of the system were derived through a systematic process of literature review and expert interviews, resulting in two common design principles and six phase-specific principles with detailed guidelines. The prototype featured three core components: a learner activity support system, an attention detecting and alarming system, and a dashboard. A usability test conducted with 10 high school students revealed that the system effectively supported attention planning through AI feedback, enabled attention monitoring with data visualization, and facilitated self-assessment. This study offers practical design principles for an AI based meta-attention support in digital learning environments that can be applied across various educational contexts.
