아리스토텔레스의 공통감각을 단초로 하여 ‘상식’과 ‘상식인’이 담고 있는 교육적 의미의 한계와 가능성을 검토하였다. 이를 위하여 ‘공통감각’과 로마 공화정 이후 태동한 ‘공유관념’, 그리고 ‘상식’의 일상적 의미와 아울러 상식의 성립조건과 속성을 검토하였으며, 이를 다시 개인 내 의미와 개인 간 의미로 논의하였다. 페인 이후 상식은 공교육의문제가 되었다. 보편교육이 지향하는 일차적 인간상이 ‘상식인’임을 전제로 자유교육과 인격 형성의 측면에서 교육적문제를 검토하였다. 집단상식의 폐해를 벌린의 ‘고슴도치와 여우’의 틀로 조명하였다. 교육적 가능성은 사회적 의미보다는 개인 내 의미에 있음을 확인하고 그 가능성을 인식경계의 확장과 질성적 특징의 측면에서 논의하였다.
Abstract
This paper has tried to examine the senses of common sense in order to tackle its educational implications. First of all, Aristotle’s κοινη αισθησιs whose sense is the personally common perceived senses and the ancient Roman’s commonly shared notions have been taken into account, which are seen as the origin of today’s common sense. These two throw light on the two aspects of common sense, namely the intra-personal and the inter-personal. The latter links to the idea of public education in the sense of the modern mass education. Some points of this idea lead us to the dangers of collective common sense, as shown in the paper. And under the intra-personal aspect, we never fail to examine the idea of liberal education and character formation for the possibilities of the common sense man. Alternatively our educational concerns are to be focused on the Dewey’s qualitative thought and Bergson’s durée as well as the Oriental tone of cognitive realms expanded.
