A Semiotics-Based Educational Method Studies for the Festival Literacy

The purpose of this study should be finding the practical potentiality of humanities by applying the semiotic method for culture analysis to culture educations. Because this paper takes up the position that cultural semiotics doesn't end in an flat appreciation of culture but can suggest more profound alternatives by the multi-dimensional analysis of culture. And cultural semiotics will enable students to get the abilities to develop new cultural contents. Therefore, this paper makes an analysis of the 'Jarasum International Jazz Festival (JIJF)' with a view of cultural semiotics. Regarding JIJF as a cultural text, this paper tried to deduce semantic features constructing JIJF and find the text meaning of JIJF through the interaction between semantic factors. This study also confirmed the realm of cultural semantic value of JIJF in terms of Semprini's 'Consumption Value Model' and carried out positioning work about the correlation between other jazz festivals in Korea. Most of all, the final aim of this study is not on the semiotic analysis of festival, but on the application of the analyzing methods to education. For this, the narrative schema of Greimas was adopted, which suggested humanistic model for the education of festival culture.
