초록

This grounded theory study was designed to investigate and further understand Asian American students’ cultural experiences within an American cultural context. Three Asian American undergraduate students, all enrolled in a large public university, participated in semi-structured interviews. Findings indicate that students who developed an American identity as their primary identity were confronted with more inner conflict than students who identified themselves primarily as Asian American. These students also experienced fewer opportunities to nurture their social life, while their academic life was influenced by students’ high educational motivations. However, some academic motivations were external and thus gave rise to increased mental health issues. Students struggled with the model minority stereotype and it became evident that living in a bicultural environment may cause a lack of social integration and can be damaging to the psychological wellbeing of Asian second- generation students as they negotiate their two competing sets of cultural values. Not surprisingly, Korean society is becoming more culturally and ethnically diverse and it is expected that some racially and ethnically diverse minority students need to negotiate cultural circumstances. This study provides Korean educational administrators opportunities to think how they can integrate cultural diversity in Korean society.
