Kim, K.J. The associations of obesity and exercise participation with body composition, blood levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in adult women. Exercise Science, 17(2): 119-128, 2008. The aim of current study was to examine the associations of obesity and exercise participation with body composition, blood levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in adult women. The ratios of muscular area to fat area in both abdomen and thigh were significantly(p<.05) lower in the obese group than in the non-obese group. The ratio of muscular area to fat area in thigh was significantly (p<.05) higher in the exercise group than in the non-exercise group. Blood levels of IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly (p<.05) higher in the obese group than in the non-obese group, whereas grip strength and PEI were significantly(p<.05) lower in the obese group than in the non-obese group, Blood levels of IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly(p<.05) lower in exercise group than in the non-exercise group. Blood level of IL-6 was significantly(p<.05) correlated with body fat, and TNF-α level was significantly(p<.05) correlated with abdominal and thigh fat areas. The current findings of the study suggest that participation of regular exercise may be an effective means of protecting circulating IL-6 and TNF-α levels from being elevated secondary to sarcopenic obesity.
