Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of swimming exercise on GLUTs, MCTs, LDH, and caspase-3 expression of skeletal muscle in the streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Seven-week old male SD rats were divided into control group (CON, n=10), diabetes group (DM, n=10) and diabetes-exercise group (DM+Ex, n=10). The data from this study were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, repeated measures two-way ANOVA and paired t test. The rats in DM+Ex group were made to swim (5 days/week, 60 min/day) for 8 weeks without load. In the present results, glucose transporters (GLUTs), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) protein levels were significantly reduced in DM group compared to CON (p<.001). In contrast, GLUTs, LDH and MCTs protein levels were significantly enhanced in DM+Ex group compared to DM group (p<.001). And there were no significant change in glucose, insulin, and C-peptide level of DM+Ex group. Therefore, this study suggested that swimming exercise improves functions of skeletal muscle in the diabetes.
