Abstract
In this study, we propose an extension of the MIRID (Model with Internal Restriction on Item Difficulty) model, which explains item difficulty by verifying the relationship (or factor structure) between constructs from the perspective of item difficulty, to a multidimensional MIRID model. When test developers assume specific relationships between constructs during the test development stage and design items accordingly, attempts to explore these relationships have been made through several item response models, such as hierarchical item response models and second-order models. However, these models assume unidimensionality in tests, which limits their application in test situations where items measure more than one construct(multidimensionality). Therefore, in this study, to extend the applicability of the MIRID model, we propose a multidimensional component MIRID model. We applied this model to empirical data and compared the analysis results with those of unidimensional MIRID model and general multidimensional model to examine the usefulness of the multidimensional component MIRID model. The empirical analysis revealed that the information provided by the multidimensional component MIRID model regarding item difficulty and the relationships between components was consistent with that provided by other models. However, the model fit of the multidimensional component MIRID model was superior, indicating that the model, which reflects the multidimensionality of the data and the component structure, can be effectively utilized in empirical data analysis.
