Abstract

This study aims to examine the significance of memory in the field of education, considering the awareness that relatively limited discussion has been conducted on the relationship between memory and education in educational research. Thus, it theoretically explores a series of discussions on collective memory by Maurice Halbwachs and Jan and Aleida Assmann, and examines the insights embedded in Metz's culture of remembrance, thereby studying the educational implications of these perspectives. Halbwachs's concept of communicative memory emphasizes that even personal memory is formed within the framework of social groups, whereas Assmanns' notion of cultural memory is useful in analyzing the various forms of cultural representation that enable memory transmission. The discussions on memory by Halbwachs and Assmann do not regard collective memory as a fixed entity; rather, they highlight both its function within real-world politics and its constant potential for change. This perspective suggests that the past itself cannot be directly accessed through memory, and that any approach to the past is inevitably shaped by the present perspective. The term culture of remembrance proposed by Metz draws attention to the fundamental limitations of remembering, and the term 뱈emory inherently contains aspects of both justifying and disrupting the present. This aligns with Benjamin's perspective on the philosophy of history, which highlights the fundamental limitation that thought cannot fully reproduce the past. Examining Heydorn's education theory, which emphasizes the contradictory nature of education, clarified that the object of memory should be understood as the failure of education's promise to human dignity, and that memory itself should be regarded as an object of self-critical reflection within education. Based on these considerations, the educational implications of the discussions on memory are as follows. First, education should focus on the way memory itself mediates and represents past events socially and culturally, considering the social nature of memory. Second, performing dynamic and incomplete memory under present conditions forms the foundation of education. Third, as the object of memory is both the result and condition of education, the pedagogical reflection on memory is inherently related to the concept of education itself. Fourth, education is positioned within the tension between the past, which stirs the present, and the currents of the era, which seek to fix the past as a predetermined and fixed proposition.
