Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the concept of happiness in four-year-old children through picture book reading activities. The study subjects were 24 4-year-old children, 12 in the experimental group and 12 in the control group. Sixteen picture books containing sub-elements of the concept of happiness were selected. The experimental group was read the books and engaged in extended activities related to the picture books. The research results are as follows. First, in order to find out the effect of picture book reading activities on the concept of happiness in young children, a happiness scale test was administered to 4-year-old children in the experimental and control groups. As a result, it was found that after the picture book reading activities, the experimental group showed statistically significant development in the sub-elements of happiness, such as positive emotions, immersion, parental relationships, and meaning of life, compared to the control group. Second, to examine the changes in children's concept of happiness as a result of the happiness-related picture book reading activity, children in the experimental group were asked about their concept of happiness before and after the activity. As a result, it was found that 4-year-old children showed various changes in their concept of happiness after the activity, moving away from the concept of happiness that they had seen before as simple material satisfaction or temporary pleasure, to positive emotions, positive interpersonal relationships, communion with nature, immersive experiences, and meaning of life. In this study, we analyzed the changes in children's concept of happiness through picture book reading activities related to happiness by factor.
