과학에서 사실과 가치가 원리적으로 구분된다거나 과학이 오직 인식적 가치에 의해서만 지배되는 활동이라는 시각은 과학이 본래 가진 모습을 흐리거나 왜곡시킬 수 있다. 과학적 실천은 끊임없는 평가 활동을 필요로 하고, 이런 평가 활동은 인식적인 평가와 미적인 평가 및 도덕적인 평가를 포함하는 가치 평가의 전 영역에 걸쳐 있다. 여타 인간 삶의 활동이 그렇듯이 과학의 탐구 활동 또한 상황 속에서 이뤄지는 것이기에, 과학의 평가 기준도 상황을 벗어난 것이 아니라 상황에 맞춰 적합성을 가릴 수 있고 그 자체 늘 평가 대상이 되는 그런 기준이다. 이렇게 과학의 목표와 기준 및 과학적 지식을 포함하는 과학 활동의 산물이 늘 평가의 대상이 될 수 있음을 인정한다면, 과학에서 사실/가치의 이분법과 인식/비인식 가치 이분법은 성립할 수 없다.
Abstract
There may be a view that principled distinction should be made in science between fact and value, or science should be governed only by an Epistemic value. However, recognized that the products of scientific activity including scientific knowledges could be always under evaluation, the assumed dichotomy between fact and value as well as between epistemic/non-epistemic values would turn out to be illusory or false. In this respect, the ultimate value of science is in fact a value in view, which should be tested only with a hypothetical status. Therefore, science involves in practice endless valuation or evaluation activities over various fields, as its critical parts.
