성격적 탁월함(ethike arete)은 ‘지나침과 모자람 사이의 중용적 상태(mesotes)’라는 이론적 정의를 제시하는 『니코마코스 윤리학』 2.6의 논의를 연구자들은 통상 아리스토텔레스의 중용론이라고 부른다. 그런데 이 ‘중용적 상태(mesotēs)’의 ‘진의(眞意)’는 무엇일까? 일부 연구자들은 ‘아리스토텔레스가 이런 논변을 통하여 ‘우리가 처하게 되는 일상에서 최선이자 이상적인 선택은 필연적으로 중도적 행위와 감정이므로, 우리는 항상 이런 중도를 잘 파악하고 추구해야 한다’고 말하는 것으로 주장한다. 필자는 이런 입장의 대표자인 Kraut(1989)의 중도론적 해석을 비판한다. 먼저 크라우트의 주장을 분석하여 그의 주장의 근저에 있는 전제들이 무엇인지 전제가 보일 것이다. 그리고 EN 2.1~2.6의 맥락 분석을 통해 중용론이 ‘실천적 지침’이며, 중용 개념의 본질적 의미가 개별적 행위와 감정에 있다는 크라우트의 전제 및 주장이 잘못되었음을 논증할 것이다. 그리고 아리스토텔레스가 ‘중용적 상태’(mesotēs)라는 표현의 진의가 무엇인지 필자의 고찰을 제시하며 이 글을 마칠 것이다.
Abstract
This paper is about a question, what Aristotle intends to say through his doctrine of the mean. Richard Kraut in his book, Aristotle on Human Good (Princeton, 1989), claims the following: the doctrine of the mean has been provided as a substantial guide for excellent action, so what he wants to describe predominantly in it is actions and emotions in particular circumstances. Also since those actions and emotions are necessarily between doing as much as possible and doing nothing, what he wants to deliver through his discussion on the mean is not significantly different from the message of the doctrine of moderation, that is, medio tutissimus ibis. However, we disagree. To criticise Kraut, first of all, we show, through our analysis on Aristotle’s discussion on habituation and the excellence of character in general, that Kraut’s fundamental premise - Aristotle’s doctrine of the mean has been provided as a practical guide for action in particular circumstance- is problematic. Secondly, we criticize his another argument that through the concept of mesotēs Aristotle primarily indicate individual action(praxis) and emotion(pathos). Finally, having explained why Aristotle uses the expression ‘(mesotēs)’ on the character or disposition and what he intend through applying that explanation onto such abstract concepts, we conclude this paper.
