의학기술이 발달함에 따라 진단이나 치료를 하는데 있어서 다양한 기기들이 활용되고 있다. 학계에서는 의사 왓슨과 더불어 ‘수술 로봇’ 또는 ‘로봇 수술’이라는 명칭아래, 다빈치 도입으로 인해 새롭게 대두될 윤리적 또는 법적 논의가 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구는 논문 들 가운데 수술 로봇과 로봇 수술의 개념이 혼용되는 경우가 있으며 다빈치(da Vinci)가 수술 보조 기기라는 명칭이 아닌 ‘수술 로봇’이라는 용어로 사용되고 있는 것에 대한 의구심에서 비롯되었다. 이 연구의 목적은 새롭게 대두되는 기기들에 대한 정확한 용어 사용 없이는 학문적 논의가 명확하게 이루어지기 어렵고, 특히 의료와 관련된 다양한 기기들에 대한 잘못된 용어 사용은 환자들에게 잘못된 인식을 심어주고, 이는 환자의 보호자나 환자들이 병원에서 자신의 건강과 관련하여 자율성을 행사하는데 방해요소로 작용될 가능성이 존재한다. 본 논문에서는 다빈치와 관련하여 수술 로봇과 로봇 수술이 혼용되고 있는 실태를 살펴보고, 로봇의 정의를 통하여 다빈치가 그 로봇 개념에 부합하는지를 검토할 것이다. 다빈치를 ‘로봇 수술’이나 ‘수술 로봇’으로 칭하는 것이 잘못된 용어라는 것과 수술 보조 기기와 관련하여 고찰해야할 윤리적 문제를 제언하였다.
Abstract
The background of this paper is the suspicion that da Vinci is used as the term surgical robot and not as a surgical assisted device. The purpose of this study is to show why the correct terminology should be preceded in discussing ethical issues, because accurate academic debate cannot be achieved without the use of correct terminology for emerging devices, and in particular the use of incorrect terminology for medical devices can prevent patients from exercising autonomy. This research will reveal examples of the use of incorrect terms, define the concept of a robot, and examine whether da Vinci system fits into the concept of the robot. The findings suggest that it is a misnomer to call da Vinci system which lacks any autonomy and automation, as “robot surgery” or “surgical robot,” and that da Vinci should be called a surgical assisted device or surgical system.
