후설의 ‘순수 윤리학’ 이해

본 논문은 후설의 초기 윤리학으로 불리는 순수 윤리학을 고찰하고 그 의의를 드러내는 데에 목적을 둔다. 현상학을 창시한 후설은 비록 윤리에 대한 공식적인 출판물을 남기지 않았지만, 평생 동안 윤리 문제를 탐구하였다. 후설의 현상학이 현상의 보편적 이해를 추구하듯, 그의 윤리학은 보편적 윤리 수립을 지향한다. 이성에 따라 보편적인 형식판단이 도출되듯, 후설의 순수 윤리학은 가치판단 역시 이성에 따라 보편적으로 수립될 수 있다는 사실에서 기획된다. 순수 윤리학으로부터 제시되는 가치판단은 이성작용을 토대로 감정과 의지가 융합된 결과물이다. 이러한 가치판단은 객관적 형식성을 띠며 궁극적으로 최상의 보편형식으로서 정언명령을 형성하게 한다. 순수 윤리학은 질료적 차원의 보편성을 구체적으로 제시하지 못한다는 한계가 있지만, 이념의 보편성이 형식적으로나마 가능하다는 점을 시사한다. 후설은 이를 발판삼아 차후에 순수 윤리학의 가능성을 다른 방식으로 간구한다. 후설의 순수 윤리학은 이념의 규제적 기능을 선보임으로써 윤리 상대주의나 회의주의를 극복하는 학설로 이해될 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper aims to examine Husserl’s Pure Ethics and reveal the significance of his ethics. Husserl, the founder of phenomenology, explored ethical issues throughout his life, although he did not leave any official publication on ethics. Just as Husserl’s phenomenology pursues a universal understanding of phenomena, his ethics also aims to establish universal ethics. The pure ethics proposed by Husserl is designed from the fact that just as objective formal judgment is derived according to reason, value judgment can also be established universally according to reason. Value judgment presented from pure ethics is the result of synthesizing of emotion and will be based on a rational act. This valuation takes on an objective formality and ultimately forms a categorical imperative as the best universal form. Pure ethics has a limitation in that it cannot specifically present the universality of the material level, but Husserl asks for its possibility in a different way, positively taking the fact that the universal ideal is possible formally. Husserl’s pure ethics can be understood as a theory that overcomes ethical relativism or skepticism by showing the regulative function of an ethical ideal.
