Abstract
Neuromarketing can be described as a mixture of neuroscience and marketing in order to understand, predict, and control the unconscious characteristics of consumer behavior. It is a field of research that creates a bridge between the fields of neuroscience and marketing. It uses brain imaging, measurement of brain wave, eye tracking and so on as a way of gathering information about consumer's hidden motives and emotions. But it also raises several ethical issues. In this article, I tried to analyze the three ethical issues involved in neuromarketing. Ethical issues are related to breach of consumer privacy, violation of consumer autonomy, and high probability of research misconduct. Finally I did suggest that we should develop ‘a code of ethics’ for neuromarketing in a national level. Such a code of ethics must include protecting research subjects from coercion, full disclosure of ethical principles used in the study, and accurate representation of scientific methods to businesses and the media.
