Abstract
This article reexamines Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment from the viewpoint of the way and the nature of human behavior’s determination, and attempts to illustrate the meaning of the necessity governing Raskol’nikov’s actions. In Crime and Punishment Raskol’nikov’s behaviors are described, as if in the tragedies of ancient Greece, as having double motivations. A particular attention is paid to the peculiar expression “mechanically”, which consistently characterizes the protagonist’s actions of not only murder but also confession and resurrection. I argue that this phrase implies the scientific and mechanical necessity and at the same time divine necessity. In the worldview of Dostoevsky human behaviors are considered to be a tense place where the two contradicting yet not completely exclusive forces, that is, human will and freedom, on the one hand, and the supernatural influence of the divine being, on the other hand work simultaneously.
