Abstract

The funeral and memorial rites of the Khakas and Kyrgyz peoples share common elements with those of other Turkic ethnic groups while also reflecting differences shaped by their respective beliefs and traditional ways of life. The Khakas laid the body on the ground just before death to facilitate the soul’s departure and dressed the deceased in burial clothes that were turned inside out with holes cut in them. Excessive expressions of grief during funerals were restrained, and after the first anniversary memorial service, the soul was considered to have completely departed for the afterlife, after which the grave was never visited again. Traditional religious beliefs, including animism, were strongly reflected in the Khakas’ funeral and memorial customs. Similarly, the Kyrgyz funeral and memorial rites were based on common Turkic traditions but incorporated certain Islamic elements. The Quran was recited as death approached, and the deceased was wrapped in a burial shroud called a “saban.” Recitation of Quranic prayers played a central role at each stage of the funeral and memorial rituals. However, in traditional Kyrgyz funerals, wailing (lamentation) played a significant role, and the first anniversary memorial service took the form of a large festival featuring horse races, wrestling, archery, and other competitions. This event went beyond mourning, serving as an important occasion to strengthen communal bonds and showcase the family’s honor. While the Khakas’ traditional funerals were deeply rooted in soul-centered spiritual beliefs, the Kyrgyz funerals were more community-oriented and social in nature. These differences were shaped by each group’s historical background, religion, and way of life, and they remain key cultural elements that help preserve their ethnic identities to this day.
