Abstract
The rapid development of Chinese economy makes the Northeast Asian economy and its relative importance in the world economy grow. In addition, the trade and economic cooperations among the region are accelerating. The Chinese government focuses on the logistics industry and makes an extensive investment in Social Overhead Capital (SOC) such as road, railroad, harbor, and airport. This Chinese strategy may conflict with Korean national policies direction that aims at making it as the logistics hub in the Northeast Asian countries. Also, the national policies in other countries, like Hong Kong, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, and Japan, will conflict with the Korean national policies too. The objectives of this study are to analyze the growth of the Chinese logistics industry and the expansion of the Chinese SOC infrastructure derived from the rapid development of the Chinese economy and the open economy to foreign countries. We investigate the principles of the Korean national agenda-the logistics hub in the Northeast Asian countries- and examine its specific strategies. We pursue the cooperative strategy with China instead of the competitive infrastructure policies for the logistics hub. We emphasize value-added logistics linked with clusters through enhancing the manufacturing industries in Korea which have relative competitiveness in the world. Finally, we focus on the strategies for making Korea a hub of supply chain in the Northeast Asian economy.
