Abstract
The study examined the cognitive priming effect of magazine theme on viewers’ responses to magazine ad which has drawn little attention of researchers. The study developed a conceptual model related to viewer information processing and consequences of magazine ads. Based on the model, the study formulated inverted U shaped relationships between 3 levels of magazine theme-advertised product congruence (high, moderate, low) and amount of brand-related information searching from ad (Hypothesis 1), depth of brand-related information comprehension (Hypothesis 2), brand attitude (Hypothesis 3), correct recall of brand name (Hypothesis 4) and brand purchase intent (Hypothesis 5). An experiment with females in their 20’s showed that Hypothesis 1 was partially accepted(amount of brand-related information searching from ad; moderate congruence > high congruence) but the other hypotheses were rejected. The study suggested the potential reasons to be accepted partially and rejected based on further literature review and additional survey results. The remedies related to stimulus manipulation and experimental design which the study proposed are expected to help further studies increase the research quality.
