Abstract

The purpose of this study is to review empirical studies of mental health(depression, anxiety, stress, PTSD symptoms, and fear) in college students due to the spread of COVID-19, and to explore research trends, including mental health risk factors. To this end, the study selected key search terms: ‘Coronavirus’ ‘COVID-19’, ‘depression’, ‘anxiety’, ‘stress’, ‘PTSD’, ‘fear’, ‘mental health’, ‘psychological impact’, ‘university’, ‘college’, ‘student’. 651 studies were found and after prescreening, a total of 36 final studies were finalized. Of the 36 studies that reported mental health of college students in the COVID-19 situation, 22 reported depression, 24 reported anxiety, 9 stress, 6 PTSD symptoms, and 6 fear. Risk factors of depression among college students in the COVID-19 situation were reported as academic difficulties or dissatisfaction, the level of the COVID-19 situation severity, exposure to COVID-19 news, symptoms consistent with COVID-19, economic uncertainty, and women. Risk factors of anxiety included concerns about delaying academic schedules, concerns about academic activities, time to find information about COVID-19, infection of relatives or acquaintances, and economic uncertainty. Risk factors of stress were women, difficulties in securing drugs and hygiene products, academic concentration, and economic uncertainty. Risk factors for PTSD symptoms include severe COVID-19 situations such as local residence, sleep time, and graduates. Risk factors for fear were low knowledge of COVID-19, the presence of families exposed to COVID-19, first-year college students, and women. Through these findings, we propose policy, educational, and personal efforts based on university student risk factors and protection factors related to COVID-19.
