Abstract
The advancement of digital technology has transformed games from simple entertainment into communication media that facilitate social interaction. Smartphone-based mobile games now integrate social media functions, creating spaces that promote user engagement and relationship building. This study applies Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to examine how three social factors— competition, cooperation, and interaction—shape users’ psychological satisfaction and behavioral intentions. Survey data from 501 Honor of Kings players were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results show that the three social factors positively contribute to autonomy, competence, and relatedness, although their effects differ by gender and age. These findings suggest that mobile games are evolving into platforms that mediate social communication and emotional exchange. By highlighting the role of social design in fostering continuous use and engagement, this study provides theoretical and practical insights for game developers and media communication research.
