본 논문은 토마스 아퀴나스의 형이상학에서 아비첸나의 『치유의 서』와 무명 저자의 『원인론』간의 관계를 규명한다. 토마스는 형이상학에서 존재자의 “원인”으로서 신을 탐구하는데, 아리스토텔레스의 『형이상학』과 아랍 『원인론』 의 인과법칙은 상이한 사상적 전통으로 인해 직접적 연결이 용이하지 않다. 『원인 론 주해』에서 토마스는 아리스토텔레스를 인용하며 본질적 인과질서로서의 존재론 적 작용인이 질료인과 형상인 등 여타 원인들의 질서에 전이된다고 주장하는데 아 리스토텔레스의 자연주의적 원인 이론에 비추어 볼 때 이것은 상당한 해석적 비약 이다. 그런데 토마스는 『형이상학』 주석에서 관련 부분을 논할 때 아비첸나를 인 용하며 작용인 개념의 세분화를 제안한다. 여기서 제시되는 작용인의 양태 구별은 아리스토텔레스가 제시한 몇몇 핵심적 비유들을 분석하는 보편적 해석 도구로 기능 한다. 이를 근거로 본 논문은 토마스가 아리스토텔레스의 『형이상학』과 아랍『원 인론』의 인과사상을 통합하는 과정에서 아비첸나의 작용인 이론이 매개자 역할을 수행했다고 주장한다. 토마스가 존재 원인 탐구와 관련하여 두 저작의 형이상학적 내용을 결합할 수 있었던 것은, 아비첸나를 따라 자연 내적 원인과 외적 원인을 단 일한 인과질서 내에서 동시에 작용하는 원인들로 인정했기 때문이라는 것이 본 논 문의 핵심 주장이다.
Abstract
This paper illuminates the relationship between Avicenna's "Cure: Book of Healing" and the Arabic Liber de Causis in Thomas Aquinas's metaphysics. In his metaphysical inquiry, Thomas explores God as the cause of beings. However, the causal principles in Aristotle's Metaphysics and the Arabic Book of Causes are not easily reconcilable due to their disparate philosophical traditions. In his Commentary on the Book of Causes, Thomas, citing Aristotle, argues that the ontological efficient cause as an essential causal order is transferred to the order of other causes such as material and formal causes. This interpretation represents a significant leap from Aristotle's naturalistic theory of causation. In his commentary on Aristotle's Metaphysics, Thomas cites Avicenna and proposes a refinement of the concept of efficient cause. The distinction of four modes of efficient cause presented here functions as a universal interpretive tool for analyzing several key analogies proposed by Aristotle. Based on this, this paper argues that Avicenna's theory of efficient cause served as a mediator in Thomas's process of integrating the causal thought of Metaphysics and the Liber de Causis. The paper's central claim is that Thomas was able to combine the metaphysical content of these two works in his inquiry into the cause of being because, following Avicenna, he recognized intra- and extra-mundane causes as simultaneously acting causes within a single causal order.
