Abstract
Simulation is a widely used tool in decision-making processes since it is easy to use and enables the reflection of real life situations. Early studies on simulations had a weakness because they used commercial softwares with functions that were limited. Object oriented simulation, however, provides flexible features such as reusability and modularity. In this paper, the object oriented approach to modeling and simulating general container terminals is presented. The simulator based on Visual C++ provides a user friendly input and output environment with help from an object class library. Therefore, the developed simulator can be easily modified or extended. To confirm the efficiency and effectiveness of the simulator, we took into consideration two case studies, which are based on real container terminals in Busan. Then the performance of the system was analyzed. In the results of the experiment, the developed simulator proved to be more efficient in small sized container terminals. The developed simulator could be applied to various type of container terminal systems and will be an effective tool to support the analysis of the operation of container terminals.
