Abstract

How to plan a new container terminal has become the main issue for a port's decision-maker since the container business is getting busier. Simulations can be used in the decision making process tools due to its ease and ability to reflect the real world system.From a literature review of recent simulation research, most simulation models or studies mainly deal with the operation analysis area but can not fully support the container terminal planning composed of gate, yard, and berth. It dose not provide enough user flexibility either. It is therefore necessary to construct an integrated simulation model to analyze the planning of container terminals more effectively and also to adapt a flexible programming method to meet client's diversified needs. The objective of this paper is to propose the directions of simulation modeling for the planning of container terminals. In order to successfully plan a container terminal, it requires an integrated simulation model that supports rapid modeling and flexibility to model the container terminals. The object-oriented approach provides reusability and modularity that best fits these requirements.
