Single-dose Intramuscular Toxicity of Neutral Natured Blood Stasis Pharmacopuncture in Sprague-Dawley Rats

Objectives: This study was performed to analyze thesingle-dose toxicity of neutral natured blood stasispharmacopuncture extracts. Methods: All experiments were conducted at Biotoxtech,an institution authorized to perform non-clinicalstudies, under the regulations of Good LaboratoryPractice (GLP). Sprague-Dawley rats were chosen forthe pilot study. Doses of neutral natured blood stasispharmacopuncture extracts, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mL, wereadministered to the experimental group, and the samedoses of normal saline solution were administered tothe control group. This study was conducted under theapproval of the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee. Results: In all 4 groups, no deaths occurred, and theneutral natured blood stasis pharmacopuncture extractsadministered by intramuscular (IM) injection wasover 1.0 mL/animal. No significant changes in the bodyweights between the control group and the experimentalgroup were observed. To check for abnormalitiesin organs and tissues, we used microscopy to examinerepresentative histological sections of each specifiedorgan; the results showed no significant differences inany organs or tissues. Conclusion: The above findings suggest that treatmentwith neutral natured blood stasis pharmacopunctureextracts is relatively safe. Further studies onthis subject should be conducted to yield more concreteevidence.
