초록
This article explores Elizabeth Stuart Phelps’s two works, The Silent Partner and “The Tenth of January,” based on critical perspectives of Bakhtinian dialogic discourse. Phelps was one of the most popular woman novelists in the nineteenth century. She was the writer of the second best selling novel, The Silent Partner, just after Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the most populated and best selling text of the nineteenth century, However, it seems an irony that Phelps’s works including The Silent Partner suddenly disappeared into darkness without a particular reason, and around the early 1980’s, the novel was restored and published again in 1983. One of the most persuadable assumptions about the reasons why The Silent Partner had not been re-highlighted for more that 100 years is the topic of the story. There was nothing more a serious issue than the ending of slavery in the American society of the nineteenth century. But, Phelps’s most efforts to portray in her literary works were issues of gender and class. This article depicts social and cultural discriminations that women and children characters experience through the two works. During that era, regardless of class difference, women were treated as a being located in a marginal. The treatment of children was extremely miserable when they worked in a factory like their parents. This article exhibits such critical aspects in analyzing Phelps’s women and factory children characters.
