초록

This study examines news media coverage of the fourteen-month diplomatic dispute between Japan and Korea. We cross-examined four media sources (two liberal, two conservative) from Japan and Korea to investigate the values promoted by the news sources and their framing patterns. We found that Korean media published twice as many articles on the diplomatic dispute, indicating that the Korean public were much more informed than their Japanese counterpart. There was no qualitative difference in the content of the news between the two countries: Both sides tended to be nationalistic and blame the other government. However, during the dispute’s de-escalation stage, liberal newspapers published many more editorials advocating mediation compared to conservative papers.
