1950년대 한국 여성의 헤어스타일에 관한 연구- ‘여원’ 여성지를 중심으로 -

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how the woman's hair style trend had been changed in 1950s by analyzing the characteristics for the shape of woman's hair in that period. For this study, a lot of documents and papers related the woman's hair style were collected and reviewed. In particular, to analyze the characteristics of woman's hair style trend in 1950s, a lot of women's pictures related hair styles and articles related the influenece of the mass media from 40 volumes of woman's magazine 'Yeowon' were collected. These data were collected by using camera and scanner. The period of this study ranges from 1955 started 'Yeowon' publication to 1959. And the analysis is focused on pictures, the shapes of hair, characteristics, operation method for each hair style. Also well-fitted women, places and dresses for each hair style were found out and reinforced through the related articles. The results are as follows : In mid-1950s, the woman's hair style was characterized by population of short cut which represented neuter gender image. In the late 1950s, the hair style had been more diversified and spreaded elegant and romantic feminine image. The study results show that the women in 1950s pursued the Cut technique, Permament wave technique, pin curl technique, Iron technique and Up style. Though these woman's hair styles of 1950s were only immitation for western style(custom), related articles showed that women in those days wanted and tried to express their individuality. At that time, active period of women's advancement in society, this trend was the one of the methods for women to express the feminine attraction needed for social activities.
