Abstract
This article has scrutinized the recognition of Japan by Lee Gi Hang(a Chosun Mugwan in the late 17th century) through Pyojurok. Pyojurok is a drift journal written by Lee Gi Hang who was repatriated to Chosun through Edo and Tsushima Island after he was drifted out at the East Sea and drifted ashore at Hokkaido. The finding in this paper are summarized as follows. First, Lee Gi Hang had a considerably amicable thoughts of Japan. It was a striking contrast to most of the 17th century’s Chosun scholars who regarded Japan as an irreconcilable enemy and were afire with vengeance. While the late Chosun Dynasty’s scholars were considering Japanese as barbarians based on the View of China-Barbarians, there was hardly such a perception to him. Second, As if the late Chosun Dynasty’s Tongshinsas were surprised at the prospering cities of Japan and kept on record of the fact, Lee Gi Hang placed high value on the economic prosperity of Japan. Third, There was a difference between regions in the recognition of Japan by Lee Gi Hang. He had a very amicable recognition of Matsumae-han in Hokkaido where he was drifted ashore for the first time. Though while he was being transferred to Edo, Osaka and then Tsushima Island, he had not such a very amicable recognition of Japan Honshu. The reason why he had a different recognition of Japan was closely related to their treatment and economic interests. At Matsumae-han he established emotional rapport through exchanges of poems and writings and even received generous farewell gifts. But since Edo there were no exchanges of poems and writings and he received no gifts but foods and beverages. The fact that a recognition of a country can be different in accordance with the degree of emotional exchanges and economic interests would be confirmed through Lee Gi Hang in the late 17th century.
