Abstract

Myeongwolamcheonbang and Deokcheonliangcheonbang were irrigation facilities developed in the early and mid-16th century. The two cheonbangs were built in the rapids of the Deokcheon River, which requires less labor but can irrigate more areas. As for the regional background, the construction of the embankment of the Namgang River in 1413 and the manufacture and supply of Sucha are noteworthy. In addition, knowledge about the construction of Geumsanji, a large-scale reservoir in the mid-15th century, and the development of cheonbang in Kang Sug-gyeong cannot be left out. Jo Jeong·Kim Jing(?~?)·Lee Je-sin(1510~1582) led the development and expansion of cheonbang in the Deokcheon River. Jo Jeong is Jo Ji-seo's eldest son. Jo Jeong's father's older sister's son is Jo Eon-hyeong, Jo Sig's father. The wife of Jo Deug-hwang, the eldest son of Jo Jeong, and Kim Jing are 6th cousins. The Kim Jing and Kim Dam brothers haved a friendly relationship with Jo Sig's disciple Lee Je-shin. Jo Jeong, Kim Jing, and Lee Je-sin are members of the influential Sajok of Gyongsang-udo. They were building a direct or indirect network through marriage and the relationship of their teachers. Around 1510, Jo Jeong developed the Cheonbang of the Deokcheon River with the aim of expanding the economic base by developing the lowlands of Wondangchon. Jo Jeong first excavated along the Myeongwolam eroded by the Deokcheon River to create an irrigation ditch of 600m and blocked the Dahoetan to store water. The Irrigation ditch of myeongwolamcheonbang was divided into two branches at Sutongmog, about 3km from cheonbang. Both Irrigation ditches were used to supply irrigation water to the lowlands of Wondangchon. The size of the irrigation area is unknown, but it developed into the irrigation field of Baegseomjigi by the end of the 18th century. The development of the cheonbang marked a new turning point in the development of rice farming and the reclamation of lowlands in Wondang-li. As a result, social changes such as the prosperity of Sajok and the formation of new villages occurred in Wondang-li. Deokcheonliangcheonbang was developed by Kim Jing in the 1540s. Kim Jing made the Irrigation ditch by excavating the southern foothills of the Deokcheon River from Jungtaedong to Geumimanpyeong. The irrigation ditch was 4km long. Later, Lee Je-sin extended it, but it was destroyed by a very fast river. Therefore, rapid development of irrigation farming by river irrigation did not occur in the lowlands of Geumimanpyeong in Baeggog-li. However, paddy farming using water from the valley in the back mountain area was slowly but continuously expanded. As a result, social changes took place in Geumimanpyeong.
