Abstract
Turkish Delight and Lion Aslan : Secularity and Transcendence in The Chronicles of Narnia Due to the industralization and evolution theory, the secularization in Britain was strong in the cultural and academic environment of the twentieth century. Influenced by George MacDonald and J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantastic mysticism, C. S. Lewis saw the interrelationship between literature and religion as a good device to fight against the secularism. However, his uses of metaphoric and mythological figures in quest allegories often caused the reader to doubt Lewis’s authenticity of Christianity. For Lewis who always favored the fantastics such as myths, legends and folktales, syncretism was a kind of antidote to avoid the rigidity of religion. Opposing the limitation imposed by the enlightenment rationalism and scientific methods of the twentieth century, Lewis emphasized the emerging power of the imagination inherent in the mixture of fantasy and religion. All the seven works in The Chronicles of Narnia show the young heroes’ quest of the transcendental power in mindscape rather than in landscape, subverting the realistic perception of the natural world. In special, Edward Pevensie and Eustace Clarence work as the heroic models who finally receive the grace of Aslan, annihilating the self over the secular and ego-centric lifestyle. This resymbolization process of pilgrimage in Lewis’s work leads readers to the gate through which the sense of being is connected to the whole of universe.
