Abstract
This study discusses The Prelude's authenticity as an epic surveying Romantic elements in William Wordsworth's heroism and heroic argument. Wordsworth praises imagination as an absolute and eternal power, and tries to reveal it by the confession of his own experience. He no longer praises marital qualities, neither does he try to depict outward action with ornaments of epic. Instead, he asserts the powerful impact of imagination and tries to express “the might of souls" in the internalized heroic argument. These romantic modifications agree with the narrator's own definition of epic theme in the third book of The Prelude. The narrator's definition, along with Wordsworth's theory and practice of epic, focuses on men's inner power and heroic action in the mind. Asserting the importance of private inner fulfillment, and deriving communal prospect from it, Wordsworth comes to cherish the spirit of epic. The Prelude's authenticity as an epic does not lie in its similarities with other precedent epic themes and styles, but lies in its innovations on heroism and heroic argument.
