초록

This paper is an attempt to review the meaning and significance of boredom represented in the poetic works of T. S. Eliot. Since boredom experienced by modern man is one of the central concerns to him, he treats consistently the various aspects of boredom in his descriptive sketches of the modern metropolis. Many critics and philosophers, such as Cleanth Brooks, Elizabeth Goodstein and Peter Toohey examine boredom in respect of alienation in modern society and the meaninglessness of modern life. However, Eliot learns a new meaning of boredom from Charles Baudelaire at the time of his conversion to the Church of England. He finds that Baudelaire who was known as a deviant was essentially a kind of Christian who struggled “towards the spiritual life” out of ennui, and that boredom could be a possibility of redemption from the world of monotonous repetition and to distil the eternal from the transitory. He designates this kind of boredom as acedia. On the basis of his own distinction between boredom and acedia, this paper examines acedia represented in his poetry and finds some interesting facts that he has also the same tendency to acedia that Baudelaire had. Through acedia Eliot finds a new task of a poet “to see the boredom, and the horror, and the glory” beneath beauty and ugliness.
