초록
The mixed reception of Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2005 bestseller Never Let Me Go is indicative of a continuing debate among scholars and literary critics regarding the proper parameters of the science fiction genre. There exists a slit between those who take the all inclusive stance that even quasi science fiction works must be incorporated into the genre and those who argue that the integrity of the genre must be sustained by remaining faithful to the criteria purported by the science fiction establishment. The purpose of this paper is to revisit this debate taking a closer look at Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go within the framework of science fiction discourse, in order to assess its indebtedness to, as well as conspicuous departures from, the established norms of the genre, thereby properly gauging authorial intent and determining the work’s latent meaning therein. This study concludes that although Ishiguro seemed to have little practical understanding of the mechanics of science fiction writing, he, nevertheless, realized the genre’s potential in shedding new light on his personal views concerning the human condition.
