초록

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, symptom changes, and patient satisfaction among dysmenorrhea patients treated with herbal medicine under the Second Phase Herbal Medicine Insurance Pilot Program. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 63 patients with dysmenorrhea who received herbal medicine at a university-affiliated Korean Medicine hospital between April 2024 and March 2025. Medical records were reviewed to assess clinical characteristics, pattern identification, and types of prescribed herbal formulas. Additionally, symptom changes were assessed through follow-up interviews, and an online survey was conducted to evaluate treatment outcomes and perceptions of insurance-related economic benefits. Results: The most common pattern was ‘qi stagnation and blood stasis’ (58.7%), with Hyeonburigyeong-tang and Cheongyeoljohyul-tang being the most frequently prescribed formulas. After treatment, 46.7% of patients reported reduced pain intensity, along with improvements in prolonged pain, menorrhagia, and premenstrual syndrome. In the satisfaction survey, 87.5% experienced symptom improvement, 93.8% expressed willingness to take the herbal medicine again, and 96.9% stated they would recommend it to others. Moreover, 96.9% positively evaluated the economic impact of insurance coverage, with 81.3% describing it as “very helpful”. Conclusions: Herbal medicine coverage under national insurance may improve symptom management and access to treatment for patients with dysmenorrhea. High levels of satisfaction and acceptance suggest that these findings may inform future healthcare policy. Nonetheless, further large-scale, multi-center studies using validated tools and long-term follow-up are warranted.
