Abstract
This study aims to analyze the process of action decision of female victims of domestic violence and develop a theory on the process that the victims escape from the violence based on the result found. The participants were 10 female victims who returned to their home after being sheltered in institutions and counseling offices however, they reported the recurrence of violence and currently are requesting shelter again. For the study method, this study employed the grounded theory approach designed by Strauss and Corbin (1998). As a result of data analysis, 92 concepts and 29 subcategories and 12 categories were deduced from the data. The process of action decision of the participants appeared to be divided into the following stages: ‘accepting’, ‘recognizing violence and countermove’, ‘retrying’ and ‘identifying the violence’. The core range was designed as ‘a safe life by ending the violence,’ and as a result of the analysis on action decision types of victims, the types were classified into an ‘independence type’, ‘seclusion type’ and ‘reunion type’. The ‘independence type’ victims were the ones who wantedto divorce after realizing the severity of the violence, while the ‘seclusion type’ victims felt they could not be free from the violence at all and had difficulties in making decisions about their next actions. The ‘reunion type’ victims wanted to change husbands’ behavior and have peace in their families. Lastly, the study discussed practical solutions from the a social welfare perspective for the three different types.
