Abstract

This study aims to investigate the characteristics of battered women’s change in their actions, especially their help-seeking from social support systems, in relation to the five stages of change from Transtheoretical model. This study also attempts to show the external factors constructing the change for battered women. In-depth interviews with ten survivors of domestic violence revealed the following:1) Korean battered women tend not to go through each of five stages of change sequentially. They usually skip the preparation stage among the five stages of change. 2) Korean battered women tend to show diverse actions not only in the action stage but also in other stages. They seek safety and separation and expand their help-seeking to get emotional support, information and resources, and self-sufficiency. 3) The threshold of abuse, positive responses from social support systems, and self-sufficiency seem to construct women’s change.
