본 연구는 다다이스트로 잘 알려진 마르셀 뒤샹의 반전통적 예술의 이론적, 사상적 기반을 당시 아나키즘과의 연관성 아래서 조망하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 제1차 세계대전을 계기로 유럽 전역은 전쟁의 물리적 충격뿐만 아니라 그에 못지않은 정신적 충격에 강타당했고, 지성인들과 예술인들의 사상적 재고가 강하게 대두되었다. 이에 불어닥친 서구 전통과 가치관에 대한 회의와 파괴적 대안은 각지에서 동시다발적으로 일어난 다다(Dada) 운동으로 표출되었고, 문화예술계는 반전통과 반미학의 기치 아래 전통적 장르를 뛰어넘으며 기존의 개념을 전복하고자 했다. 이 중에서 특히 뒤샹의 다다 예술은 작가로서의 짧은 활동 기간에도 현대미술의 다양한 양상들의 맹아를 일찍이 싹틔우고 있었으며, 그 실천의 기반에는 19세기 독일의 유럽문명 비판자로서 아나키즘 사상을 전개했던 막스 슈티르너(Max Stirner)의 영향이 자리 잡고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 뒤샹의 다다 예술이 아나키즘의 문화적 실천이라는 측면에서 그 특성을 규명하여, 이후 현대미술의 전개가 뒤샹의 아나키스트적 예술관에 맞닿아 있다는 점을 제시하고자 한다.
Abstract
This study aims to take a view on the relationships between Marcel Duchamp’s art-theoretical and ideological basis of his Anti-conventional art with the anarchism. The First World War struck the whole area in Europe, and as a result, an ideological reconsideration came strongly to the fore among the intellectuals and artists. The Dada Movement arose as a destructive alternative due to the doubt on the Western tradition and values; the field of art and culture was a battleground for subverting the older conception by overcoming the border among cultural genres, claiming anti-convention and anti-aesthetics. Among many Dadaists, Duchamp’s art was germinating the sprout of contemporary art in spite of his short art career, based on the anarchist idea of Max Stirner, a German philosopher in the nineteenth century, who criticized the European civilization and developed anarchist theory. Therefore, this study tries to suggest a point that the process of contemporary art has stemmed from Duchamp’s anarchist art, by arguing his Dadaist art in terms of the cultural practice of anarchism.
